Soap Ring and Hard-Water Film on a Tub and Tile Surround
That ring around the tub is two different problems layered together, and they come off differently.

You scrub the tub on Saturday and by the next weekend the ring is back, a gray band at the waterline with a rough, chalky layer on the wall above it. It feels like the tub is working against you. It isn't, but two separate things are building up at once, and treating them as one is why the usual wipe-down doesn't hold.
What you're actually looking at
The soap ring is soap scum. Soap, body oils and the minerals in your water combine into a gray-white film that clings to the tub and the lower tiles. It's slick when fresh and hard when old.
Hard-water film is different. When water evaporates it leaves its minerals behind, and over time they form a cloudy, chalky coating on glass, fixtures and the shower floor. If your faucet has a white crust around the base, your water leaves deposits. The two layers sit on top of each other, so you have to deal with both.
Grout makes it worse. The porous lines between tiles hold grime and moisture, and they darken first. Around the fixtures and the drain, the same buildup hides in the seams.
How to get it off, corner by corner
Work in small sections rather than spraying the whole alcove and hoping. Start at the top of the surround and move down, since runoff carries grime below. Dampen the wall, apply your cleaner, and give it the time the label asks for. Scrubbing before the cleaner has had time to work is the main reason people give up.
- Take bottles, razors and mats out first, so you can see and reach everything.
- Rinse the surface with warm water to loosen the top layer.
- Apply cleaner to one section at a time and let it sit for the time on its label.
- Scrub with a non-scratch pad on the flat surfaces and a soft brush in the grout lines.
- Detail the fixtures with a small brush around the base, the handles and the drain.
- Rinse thoroughly, because leftover cleaner dulls the surface and collects new grime.
- Dry with a microfibre cloth so you can see what's left before moving on.
Check the label on whatever you use, and test it on a hidden spot first. Natural stone, some tub finishes and older fixtures don't all tolerate the same products, and a dull patch in a visible spot is hard to undo. Keep the scrubbing gentle on glossy surfaces.
What a good result looks like
Go2Girl Cleaning's tub and tile photos are before-and-after panels, which is the fair way to judge this job: same tub, same corner, different day. A restored tub should show an even color at the waterline, grout lines that match each other again, and fixtures that are clear instead of crusted.
If the buildup is years deep, expect it to take more than one pass. Heavy film often lightens in layers, and it's better to repeat the steps than to switch to harsher scrubbing.
Keeping it off
Prevention takes a minute or two a day and saves the weekend scrub. It's also the cheaper route, since the longer film sits, the more passes it takes to shift.
- Squeegee the walls and glass after each shower. It takes under a minute and removes the water before the minerals dry.
- Wipe the faucet and the tub rim with a dry cloth now and then.
- Run the exhaust fan during and after the shower, or open a window, so the room dries faster.
- Don't leave bottles sitting on the tub edge, since each one leaves its own ring.
- Do a quick weekly wipe-down of the surround before the film gets a chance to harden.
When to hand it off
If the film has been there for years, the grout has gone dark, or you're about to move out or list a rental, it's worth booking the job. Grout that has gone dark usually needs a brush and patience rather than force, which is a lot to take on in a bathroom you also have to use every morning. A bathroom is the second room a new tenant or buyer checks, and the tub is the first thing they look at there.
